Something I hear from ‘people’ usually said quietly, sometimes wrapped in humour:
“It’s just a little thing I’m working on…”
“I don’t know if it’s any good…”
“I’m probably wasting my time, but…”
I want you to hear me, your writing matters!
Every piece of it from the messy drafts, the half-finished chapters, the stories that sit quietly in notebooks or open tabs for months at a time. It doesn’t have to be published or perfect.
Why This Matters to Me (And You)
When you downplay your writing, this happens:
- You stop showing up consistently.
- You hesitate to invest time, energy, or money into your writing.
- You wait to be told you are good enough.
And that waiting? It stalls everything.
Only you get to decide if you’re a writer
The Difference When You Decide You Are a Writer
You will start:
- Making time to write, even when life is busy
- Finishing pieces instead of endlessly editing the first chapter
- Letting someone else read your work (even though it feels uncomfortable)
- Being open to feedback without letting it discourage you.
It’s quiet. It’s consistent. And it builds confidence far more effectively than waiting ever will.
Editing Isn’t About Tearing Your Work Apart
This is something I care deeply about as an editor.
A lot of writers (myself included) worry that editing means losing their voice, that someone will come in and reshape their work into something unrecognisable.
Good editing doesn’t do that.
Good editing listens first.
Your voice stays yours. It just becomes stronger.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Writing can feel incredibly lonely. At times you will need that solitary time, but it is just as important to find support. Like-minded people who you can bounce ideas off, talk about your challenges with.
Whether that’s:
- An editor who helps shape your manuscript
- A writing coach who keeps you accountable
- A small circle of people who genuinely understand what you’re building
If You Take One Thing from This…
Remember:
You don’t need to earn the right to take your writing seriously.
You don’t need a publishing deal.
You don’t need a finished book.
You don’t need anyone else to validate it first.
You just need to decide that what you’re creating matters.
If you’re at a point where you want a bit of guidance, support, or simply someone to respond to your work (without leaving you waiting for weeks), that’s exactly how I work.
You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
